Summer Newsletter – August 2010

Coach’s News:

  • Simon will be getting his own room in the converted chair store.
  • Mid-week Mini coaching resumes in September and there will be a Sports Camp every half term for juniors. Look for details at the new location for junior matters which will be on the lower half of the verandah noticeboard.

Tennis Matters:

  • Scoreboards: these are now in operation on the main courts and have proven to be extremely popular with spectators especially during the summer inter-club matches.
  • 2010 Finals Day: photographs are now on show in the bar. The event itself went very well with good weather and the first use of the new club barbecue.
  • Floodlights on courts 1,2,3 and 4: once the installation is completed in early September, matches of all types can begin to be played during the shorter evenings. Members will be able to purchase tokens to use the floodlights but no charge is due during Middlesex league matches or the Friday evening social.
  • Ball boxes: these are in dire need of refurbishment. Any creative types out there ?
  • Sunday 19th September: Veterans Final and the Mixed Doubles Plate Final
  • Sunday 3rd October : Closed Mixed Tournament (with a fallback date of Sunday 10th October)

Social Scene:

  • Saturday 20th November 7:30: Quiz Evening
  • New TV in clubhouse: without a doubt this came into its own during the World Cup and Wimbledon (and will do so with other tennis championships). Other uses could be Film Nights with drinks from the bar and food from our resident “chef” John.
  • “Grand switching on of the floodlights” complete with a curry supper. Date tbc
  • Scalextric evening: date tbc
  • Junior Fun Evening on a Friday in September: dates tbc.
  • Floodlit Matches: with the new floodlights imminent the chance of organising friendlies & inter-team matches will definitely boost the competitive and social scene during the normally quieter autumn and winter periods. John has offered to cook team suppers for friendlies under the same arrangements as in summer and for inter-team matches (within the club) at £4 a head if members are interested in post- match nourishment. Details to follow.
  • Friday 17th December : Christmas Party

Members Activities:

  • Friday 24th September Macmillan Coffee Morning organised by Doreen Pay.

Tennis Tips: The ITF (governing body of world tennis & rule maker) has a Code for non-officiated tennis matches. One section states: “Courtesy: tennis is a game that requires cooperation and courtesy from all participants who should not: conduct loud post-mortems after points; complain about shots like lobs & drop shots; embarrass a weak opponent by being overly gracious or condescending; lose their temper; use vile language; throw their racket; slam a ball in anger or sulk when they are losing” Interesting ? …..and Finally

Bar Time Banter

“Wouldn’t it be nice if the club could continue the fantastic summer social scene into the autumn and winter months”

Asked why he kept choosing the same dishes for his team suppers a certain men’s captain responded “because I’m a pie man”

The surreal experience of seeing the Ladies 3rd team playing their last set under moonlight at 10:15pm

Of the 27 team suppers prepared by in-house chef John the most popular chosen dishes were:

1st Thai Chicken Curry;2nd Chicken Tajine;

3rd Egyptian Fish; 4th Beef Curry;

5th Oriental Salmon.

HAPPY EATING
